Relief still eludes flood-hit

Post report, Mahendranagar, Oct 1:
Hundreds of flood affected people here in Kanchanpur district are still deprived of relief materials. If on the one hand, the local administration failed to distribute relief in an effective manner, then on the other, the provided relief materials are too meagre for the victims. Locals claim that the local level relief distribution committee led by the VDC secretary did not work efficiently for immediate distribution of relief.

District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee (DNDRC) has been providing relief materials to flood-hit people through District Red Cross Society. "It took three days to find the VDC secretary of Dekhatbhuli," said chairman of district Red Cross Keshav Raj Pant, adding, "Relief has not yet reached some villages because of inefficiency of the local relief distribution committee."

As per data collected by district Red Cross Society, about 32,000 people have been affected by the recent flood in the district. DNDRC provided 639 quintals rice, 57 quintals pulses along with beaten rice, potato, oil and salt. However, these materials have not been distributed effectively. Flood victims vented their ire against the administration when a 32-member family received just two Kg rice as immediate relief. "We have been provided only Rs 3 million for relief though Rs 25 million has been approved," said Chief District Officer Madhav Prasad Ojha.
