Differences over govt plan to relocate flood-victims

DHARAN, Sept 8 - Political parties and local administration in Sunsari district are in dispute over alternative places for resettlement of flood-displaced people. The differences surfaced lately as leaders of various political parties in the district demanded that all flood-displaced people be resettled in forest areas near Tarahara. Earlier, the government had announced it would relocate flood-victims in Sunsari district in three different places including in Jhumka, Laukahi and Singiya VDC in the district. Local administration has already begun developing necessary infrastructure for temporary shelters in Jhumka and Laukahi.

A meeting of Sadbhawana Party, Madhesi People's Rights Forum, Tarai-Madhesi Democratic Party, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and People's Front Nepal held Monday decided to resettle all flood-hit people in a single camp at Charkoshe Jhadi jungle. District level leaders of parties decided thus, arguing that it would take at least one year to resettle them in their previous villages and that the government needed to resettle them permanently in the jungle and public land for the period, according to Raghu Nath Mehta of Sadbhawana Party.

Currently, the government has provided temporary shelters for 27,378 persons belonging to 4,630 displaced families in 29 schools and public buildings in Inaruwa, the district headquarters of Sunsari district. This has greatly affected regular studies of a large number of students.
