Expert says no to Koshi dam construction

Indian social activist Medha Patkar has warned that the construction of Saptakoshi High Dam would put both Nepal and India in flood peril.

Patkar, who has been spearheading Save Narmada Campaign against India's most controversial dam project at Narmada River in the Indian state of Gujarat, told journalists that the Sapta Koshi High Dam will invite flood danger that could cost derarly to both Nepal and India. She was in the district to attend a program about the Koshi flood of August.

"The plan of Nepal and Indian governments to construct Sapta Koshi Dam is inauspicious from environmental, cultural and religious point of view," she said.

Nepal and India had agreed to construct the would be one of the world's highest dam (269-335 meters) in 1997. Currently a joint team from both Nepal and India is preparing DPR for the project. Sapta Koshi High Dam is expected to generate 5500 MW electricity and irrigate 300,000 hectares of agricultural land in Nepal and more than that in India's Bihar state.
