Minister Sah bats for micro hydel projects

RSS KATHMANDU, Dec 30 -

Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Ganesh Sah stressed on development of small hydropower projects as an immediate solution to the existing electricity crisis. Speaking at a programme organised by Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) and Nepal Small Hydropower Development Organisation (NSHDO) in the capital today, Minister Sah said the government would lend its hand to conduct research on energy sector.

During the programme, Shreedhar Devkota was honoured for his contribution to the development of small hydropower for a long time. At the same programme, AEPC's Executive Director Dr Govinda Raj Pokhrel stated that around 60,000 households are electrified through renewal energy resources every year and that alternative energy should be developed to side away the current electricity crisis. The Center has been running various alternative energy programmes to alleviate rural poverty, minimize environmental effect and make commercial use of technology, he added.

Earlier, advisor to the ministry Kedar Sharma said the government has given high priority to energy sector by declaring this year as the year of energy. Executive Director of Center for Energy Studies at Institute of Engineering Prof Dr Jagannath Shrestha expressed his belief that the existing energy shortage would be solved once priority was laid on research and development in the sector.
