Himalayan News Service Kathmandu, December 17:
The cabinet today decided to fall back on thermal power plants for generating electricity as a stop-gap arrangement to tide over the ongoing power crisis. “The ruling coalition will come up with a detailed plan to attract investors and provide them with government’s aid and assistance to set up thermal power plants,” said Krishna Bahadur Mahara, government spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications. Minister for Water Resources Bishnu Paudel has been entrusted with the responsibility to table a comprehensive report on the power scenario in the next cabinet meeting. He has also been urged to adderss the power woes. “The government will take a decision on how to address this problem after the minister submits his report,” said Mahara.
The cabinet also approved a policy proposed by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ about forming an Education Commission in the near future. The panel will look into the problems being faced by the education sector. The PM had given an assurance in this regard to representatives of more than 10 teachers’ organisations yesterday. “The cabinet has decided to form a task force to this effect. The Ministry of Education will study the earlier agreements between the ministry and teachers before they can be implemented,” added the government spokesperson. The government will amend the Broadcasting Act with a view to providing subsidy in revenue and registration fee to the electronic media. Plans are afoot to provide more subsidies to community and low-power radio stations.
